We have been waiting patiently for such a long time. Hopefully, more major announcements will be made within the next 12 months leading up to summer 2025. We are in great need of both replacing our older C-130, as well as adding more transport aircraft to the Air Force fleet. The same applies to light-medium transport helicopters, and heavy lift helicopters.

- Negotiation for two different transport aircraft.

it won't replace the C-130 tho , we're also going to contract the C-130J-30 and modernize some current units to the same standard

I did not mean replacing it as platform to platform. What I meant is that it will add a new logistical capability by air, as well as replacing older units. Also added a quote☝️. We are in great need of strengthening our logistical fleet in the air. Hopefully, we will see at least 20-24 new transport aircraft procured in total.

France's La Tribune report mentioned some key points :

Emmanuel Macron's visit to Morocco at the end of the month (October 29?) as part of the warming of relations between Rabat and Paris, is whetting the appetites of French industrialists, including those in the arms and energy sectors. According to our information, two files are under serious discussion (helicopters and submarines), one of which is at the top of the pile (helicopters). Airbus Helicopters and Morocco are negotiating a major order for Caracal, the number of which could amount to 18 aircraft (12 for the air force and 6 for the gendarmerie), according to concordant sources. This is a contract estimated at between 600 and 800 million euros, which would provide work in Marignane and Bordes for the engine manufacturer Safran Helicopter Engines (SHE). On the other hand, Morocco has chosen Embraer to equip its air force with the new tactical transport aircraft (between 6 and 8 C-390 Millennium). For its part, Airbus is negotiating with Royal Air Maroc (RAM) the sale of A220, A320 and A330 aircraft with a view to renewing part of the company's fleet. A fleet that has so far been exclusively Boeing, with the exception of a few aircraft from the Brazilian Embraer (Embraer 190) and the European manufacturer ATR, owned 50-50 by Airbus and Leonardo (ATR 72-600).

Strong South Korean competition for Naval Group
For its part, Naval Group is facing very strong competition in Morocco from the South Korean shipyards Hanwha and Hyundaï for the sale of two submarines and the construction of a submarine. In particular, it must face fierce rivals who offer cheaper submersibles but equipped with the same technology that Naval Group developed with Saft (lithium-ion batteries). These batteries give a competitive advantage, particularly against the market leader in conventional submarines ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). The balance is currently tilted in favor of South Korean submarines. Morocco is expected to order submarines in 2025.

It must be exhausting keeping track of all that, Morocco is busy securing deals and making thoughtful defense decisions. We prefer to make smart moves, not just flashy ones, something you might not be familiar with. But I’ll make sure to tag you when the submarine shows up, along with the reminder that we never needed one to sleep peacefully at night.

Marrakech Airshow 2024 (October 30 - November 2) will host many companies like Embraer, Lockheed Martin, Airbus, and others as official partners.

  • It is speculated that the first Moroccan Apaches will be showcased at the airshow, if not, they are expected to be revealed in late 2024 or early 2025.
  • In connection with Embraer's presence at the airshow, it has been announced that Embraer will supply the Moroccan Air Force with the new KC-390 tactical transport aircraft.
  • The confirmed absence of American Boeing leaves a wide open space for Airbus, strengthened by the upcoming visit of Emmanuel Macron to Morocco in October at the invitation of King Mohammed VI. Tied to Macron's visit, as well as other potential military deals, there may be a potential agreement to purchase 12 to 18 Caracal helicopters from Airbus Helicopters to replace Morocco’s Puma helicopters. This indicates Morocco's shift of interest towards Airbus, as Airbus clearly outperforms Boeing in terms of specifications.
  • Medias24 speculates that an F-35 could be present at the airshow, with the involvement of Lockheed Martin.

Welcome to the forum😊 Where did you get the news about the absence of Boeing at the Marrakech airshow? As far as I know, they will be present, even if it has not been announced on the official "Marrakech Air Show" twitter account. The Caracal helicopter, as well as submarines, will be on the agenda with the french. Airbus will have to give us a much better price tag than what they have offered in the past, and fast delivery times within 24 months. The acquisition of Caracal will not be enough to meet our needs, hopefully, we will see a bigger deal with the Americans for light to medium transport helicopters. We also need to procure a small number of CH-47.

Thanks for the welcome. I saw it in this article, but as you said, they could actually be present at the airshow. Most of our Chinooks are getting really old, and since they are a vital form of heavy transport for our army, we need to get more of them. Do you think there are other heavy transport helicopters that could be considered to replace the CH-47? I dont think there are many options, and our pilots are really experienced with the Chinooks.

CH-47 is a beast in its own class, and there are no other platforms that can meet our needs. We will see an order for more CH-47 in the upcoming period. Hopefully, our Air Force will get the deals that have been in negotiations for such a long time. The same applies to the Navy.

5 years to go until 2030!

A lot to finance our needs, Budget Law 2025 allocates between 13 and 15 billion dollars to the expenditure fund dedicated to the acquisition and maintenance of equipment for the Royal Armed Forces and support for the development of the military industry in Morocco. link
