A test block is manufactured and built prior to the actual submarine blocks, to test construction tolerances (shift from the actual circle), welding quality, welding distortions and heat affected zones. Also testing post-welding strength of the material and consistency of the construction rigs. Primarily a plain structural part of the pressure hull to ensure that it is suitable for bearing the crush depth. However, the section is less likely to be submerged. What is a Test Block?![]()
There has been quite many of the tests prior to this, can't tell exact numbers but both welding material, base material (high yield class steel) and support rings and sub-assemblies had gone through tests.
Now it is finally time to ensure the rigs can manufacture as near as perfect circle pressure hulls with least amount of residual stress and deformations, with acceptable welding quality. The test block may also be used for later constructiones unless that it has been scrapped for some of the tests.
The test block has been in construction for weeks, or months, yet they are announcing it now.
