This statement is the outcome of a colossal misunderstanding of Turkey's foreign policy dynamics.
Supporting the brotherhood was morally correct and a geopolitically wise decision. Unlike some members, I did work in the field back then. Believe me when I say: You cannot imagine how much respect, love and sympathies Turkey gained among the ordinary Arab people from Morocco to Oman thanks to our cohesive and principled policy.
The issue is slightly different. The government had a good start, won the hearts of the Arab masses but failed to change its foreign policy the minute when everybody knew that the Muslim Brotherhood was unable to regain the power.
Simply saying that our engagement for the MB was a mistake is just plain wrong.
It was an absolute disaster. It won us nothing on the field. To make matters worse half these brotherhood members are sharia wanting dictatorships. The ordinary arab offers us nothing in Turkey. It gains us no strategic victory of any kind.
I don't look really at geopolitics from a moral perspective. Moral issues have many arguments, i purely look at it from a strategic perspective, did we win or did we lose. Supporting the MB was a colossal failure.
To make matters worse Turkeys name has been dragged into the pits by supporting all the various backward ass islamist organisations. In idlib right now its filled with the worst trash and Turkey is trapped trying to get these fools to one moderate themselves and two to stop killing each other.
Azerbaijan was a success, but that was decades in the making.
Libya was a half success, even then we keep hearing them telling the Turks to leave for saving their arses.
Syria was a colossal failure. 10 million refugees and the biggest winners being the enemies of the Turks.
Everywhere else AK party touched turned to shit. The idea in principle sounds good. Support the MB to democratically remove the western installed dictators of muslim lands and then these nations will align with Turkey, as was happening with Morsi. But the result is what matters just as much as the intention if not more so. Its been one massive failure after the other. Then to make matters worse, to distract the Turkish public of these failures erdogan constantly creates new enemies to divert the Turkish public.
We need something else, erdogan and AK party have become tired and stale. We need political winners who can achieve outside of Turkeys borders. You cant expect to win with people who keep losing.
If morsi truly won in Egypt and Assad was overthrown and replaced by the MB, then i would sit here and say you know what i don't like this muppet erdogan, but the guy is geopolitically winning and winning big for Turkey.
As Turks we must not lose sight that leaders of the nation are expected to win. When you lose and you lose big your sons potentially face a future that the Palestinians or Uyghurs today are facing. And the losing is a incremental process and it sneaks up on you, most won't notice they lost the game till it happens and its too late.
If Ataturk lost the independence war, today there is no Turks in Cyprus and i suspect Azerbaijan would still be occupied. There may not have even been any Turks left in Turkey.
