Let me make a warning. The scope of the study covers 7 million academics around the world. However, only the rankings of 150-160 thousand people were announced. Thus in Turkey still could not find many successful scholars in the list. One of them is Bilge Demirköz. The other is Kadir Durak. Mr. Kadir is a name first started working quantum radar in Turkey.

Meanwhile Bogazici is in shambles right now because another inadequate political appointment was made the rector of it. Police of course doing what they do best and firing rubber bullets at the future of our country.

And then we wonder why we can't keep talent in the country.

Appointed as the Rector of Boğaziçi University. Who is Prof. Dr. Melih Bulu?

He graduated from METU Industrial Engineering Department in 1992. He completed his master's and doctoral studies at Boğaziçi University.

After completing his education, he worked in Turkish Aerospace Industry Company (TAI), which produces armored personnel carrier FMC-Nurol and F-16 aircraft in the defense industry in Ankara. He worked on CASA, ATAK helicopter and F-16 programs at TAI.
Between 2003 and 2010, Bulu taught Business Strategy and Game Theory at Boğaziçi and Istanbul Ticaret universities as part-time, and started to work as a full-time academic since 2009. He received the title of associate professor in 2008 and professor in 2016.
He served as the founding rector of Istinye University (2016-2019) and as the rector of Haliç University (2020).

In 2021, he was appointed as the rector of Boğaziçi University with the Presidential decree.

The man who will object to such a rector is foolish, to say the least.

Statement of 'resignation' from Boğaziçi Rector Melih Bulu

His appointment as the rector of Boğaziçi University attracted great reaction. Dr. Melih Bulu "Are you going to resign?" answered the question ...

Statement of 'resignation' from Boğaziçi Rector Melih Bulu

Major actions were taken yesterday to appoint a new rector at Boğaziçi University.
Professor of the discussions. Dr. Melih Bulu made a statement at HaberTürk.

The headlines of Bulu's comments are as follows:
"In my case, as far as I know, 9 candidates applied. Later, you are invited for an interview. We were interviewed. In the interview in that commission, you are asked questions appropriate to the characteristics of Boğaziçi University. The last decision is made by the President.

Before me, a rector from outside the Bosphorus was appointed from ITU. More importantly, I am a Boğaziçi native. I also taught joint lessons. We always eat and drink tea with the teachers in the Bosphorus ...

Students wrote a lot about me even when I taught at the Bosphorus. Of course, the Boğaziçi student is very smart. They also love to try their teachers. I'm used to these reactions. When he became the rector, there was a higher level of reaction. Frankly, I was waiting for the reactions.

What I did not like was the following, I could not understand how the Boğaziçi students let the others in. There are also non-university students, irrelevant people. As far as I understand, something provocative happened here. Boğaziçi student was used here. Boğaziçi students can protest wherever they want, let's not take those who are not Boğaziçi students to the campus.

There is something very practical in there, the door was broken and because there was too much they wore clamps to fasten the door.
It can turn into a rage for students who are not Boğaziçi students to enter the south campus in a crowd.

Police were not invited to the campus. Police took part in front of the campus to stop the entrance of non-students.

WILL YOU RESIGN?

No, why should I resign? Over time, we will see how efficiently we will work when we get to know each other.
There is no election for a rector in big universities, lecturers will vote, we will elect a rector. He is always appointed in good universities. In some, a search commission is established, the commission is evaluated and presented to the trustee. Since we are a state university, we choose the rector in the same way as 3 or 5 more developed universities. The election of the person to manage an institution is not a widely used method, it is not an efficient method. Democracy is a very efficient method of electing power, but you cannot elect a rector or general manager of a company by voting.

While I was studying politics at ÖDTÜ, I started at CHP. Now of course I don't see these, they always reflect me as an AK Party member, but I was a student at that time, SHP was asked for help and I started that way. Later, an offer came to me from the Liberal Democratic Party, I directed their youth organizations. I have always been in this business. I am someone who looks at politics as an academic, not just because I want to be something, but how this happens. My curiosity is management and organization. I was nominated but naturally because I didn't waste that time ...

When I was doing my doctorate in Boğaziçi, I went to the AK Party in Sarıyer when the news that the AK Party was established. Thanks to them, they made me a founding board member. Turkey party wishing to serve all of these parties. I am very against this too, we have to be much more unifying. We need to go to Boğaziçi University with this logic. I hope we will.

"I was the rector of two universities before. After all, I am a person who has been in the university for a long time. I quit active politics in 2009. After that, I was a candidate candidate in 2015, but it is not very important, I was not in active politics before.

I did not anticipate such a provocation, the reason it happened is the provocations. If this did not happen, we would have seen the standard protest culture of the Bosphorus, which is fine, I would talk to the students and this would be resolved. They don't know me, those who don't know turn their backs.

PERSONAL DEFENSE

This is the question of plagiarism. There now this goes into something technical, but in the first part of these theses there is a literature part, everything there is quotation. I didn't put it in quotation marks in some places, that's the matter. While we were writing these theses, we didn't have anything written and the formats constantly changed. There are different rules. The essence of the matter is, did you write the source of what you received? I did.

We made our preparations for Haliç University in advance, there is no management gap, the system works very well.
After 1980, a rector from ITU was appointed.

I think that as people get to know me in Boğaziçi, they will settle on the ground of compromise. At the moment, maybe there is a misinformation about whether a different culture is coming there. I am more from Boğaziçi than many people there. 8 years passed.

It is necessary to analyze the events in a large frame. The thing we would not want most is that the 150-year-old physical existence of the Bosphorus is in ruins, it could have been yesterday. So the police did it right there. It would be like an elephant walking into a glassware shop. Boğaziçi residents can always enter university, but those who are not Boğaziçi students can enter school if they have a job.

THEY MAY NOT SEE THE BIG PICTURE

Our pupil Bosphorus, Turkey's most elite, one of the top-level institutions. If we will become the top 10 leading countries in the world, Boğaziçi is a must. I look at the Bosphorus with this reflex. Maybe our students and teachers might not see the big picture. I can see him as the person sitting at the top. We have to deal with our internal issues by talking within ourselves.

I started today officially. I started talking to our teachers. I think we will get along very well with people as they talk anyway.
If Boğaziçi spends time for YÖK, there will be a lot of people there. That's why he has put himself in a little ivory tower on the Bosphorus. We must be more in Ankara.

MY RECTOR LISTENING TO HORD ROCK

I am a president who listens to hard rock, Metallica. I don't think of a thing about culture. Things that our teachers say are not going well will definitely be done. On the other hand, I have top 100 goals. I have 2 recent articles on the rankings of universities that I have written recently. Just look at these, people will see that this can happen with a logic that knows the mathematics of this job well. I want to set ambitious goals and put Boğaziçi in the top 100. After setting the goal, we will think together, how will we achieve it. If we do that we will be an example to all universities in Turkey.

I promise many things to students, but I care about the following, there is an entrepreneurship ecosystem, but I think Boğaziçi is a little behind on this issue. The start-up culture has spread all over the world, but as Boğaziçi, we fell behind here. We need to establish structures that establish and grow start-up and techno enterprises more. This will affect the logic of the whole Bosphorus.
I'm not thinking about politics again. "

Well the part I don't like about his appointment is government involvement.

I honestly don't know his qualification nor how much support he has among the other professors, but I think the university should appoint their own rectors. I hope the most fitting person for education and for ITU got appointed, but should RTE fail to be reelected the new government can just start a cleaning proces and call it "political motivated promotion wipeout".

Where he has worked isn't proof of his qualifications, especially not if it's in companies under government influences as I imagine the government (AKP/RTE) puts these people into positions to give them a chance to add something to their CV, and later on put them into universities like here. I remember some people keep mentioning Bekdil as Bokdil...

Well, if we're talking about people like TEI's Aksit who was accomplished abroad then I'd say they've proven their capability. But this doesn't necessarily mean he'd be a good rector.

Somebody are just jealous of brilliant brains of Türkiye. Without Boğaziçi üniversitesi, Turkey would be a desert.
the power is trying to desert every cultural assets, indeed vice versa they are destroying their power. Let President make war with universities, it will be punished by common sensical Turkish voters.

İf being American University is shameful for Bosphorus American University , but Why president send his son to USA?

Looks like he probably want to put more emphasis and focus on the engineering departments as opposed to the humanities. He wants to teach a new generation of engineers that can work in Turkish defense industry and other technological industries.

Ain't Bogazici the best uni Turkey's got? Teach the brightest minds of your country the 'hard studies', guided by a rector in the same field and has obviously a strategic non-naive mindset and the fruits of this labor will pay-off in the Turkish (defense) industry starting 4 years from now. Humanities are important but today's humanities are dominated by leftists and anarchists who hold naive and idealistic views.

Best brains deserve the best brain and the best rector, not the unknown rector of some unknown private university.
Boğaziçi has been doing well without president and his governor so far.

Something I wrote in another thread about the political realities of Turkey:

And for the fact that BMC gets favored over other, more established companies, that has to do with the politico-cultural background of Turkey. Turkey is a hierarchical society and working together in Turkish politics is almost not done. The political leaders all have too large ego's and that is reflective in the way the Turkish politics under-functioned from 1938-2002, hence with the army needing to take control behind the scenes in order not to let Turkey get torn apart by both internal and external forces. There is very little if any horizontal power stratification in Turkish politics and upper-level bureaucracy and thus in order for orders to be effectively carried out, Turkish politics requires a more intimate and closer contact between the President, ministers and with upper-level bureaucratic managers, business leaders and the media than in more egalistic societies such as western-European ones. Combine this with a geo-politically rising Turkey in the 'ghetto' neighborhood of the world, the power structures need to be more vertically solidified in order for the power-structure to keep functioning with enough clout. Hence a presidential system and nepotistic style of rule is more effective than an idealistically (and naive) parliamentarian system and a egalistic but very cumbersome political decision making.

Such is the political reality of Turkey.

This applies to universities also.

I'm trying to explain something to a mindset that advocates intervening in universities and science . I guess I'm naive.
