TN54 Tracked Vehicle Transmission

David Brown Santasalo has extensive experience in the design and manufacture of high performance TN54 gear systems for tracked vehicles such as the famous Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank, CRARRV recovery vehicle as well as Trojan/Titan engineering vehicles. Our proven designs are currently in service with the British Army and the Royal Army of Oman.

Features & Benefits

  • Custom designed fully automatic transmission for tracked wheeled vehicles
  • Six forward and two reverse gears at a rating of 1200 bhp with the option to increase power to 1500 bhp if required
  • Drive transmitted from the engine through a splined coupling close coupled to the engine
  • Epicyclic change speed section with multi-plate clutches
  • Single input and two in-line outputs at right angles to the input

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DBSantasalo has experience in developing and producing transmissions for heavy tracked vehicles.

Challenger 2 is very similar in weight to Altay. This should allow them to use the experience gained from Challenger 2 to help us develop an suitable and reliable transmission for Altay in a relative short time.

Engine is most likely getting input either from CAT/Perkins(England) or Doosan(South Korea) that would explain the fast development time. As long as all right belong to Turkey I couldn't care less about it though.

Doosan is the more likely candidate here as their own engine is similar to the MTU-883 to fit the K2, same problem Altay faces.

If the DV27K is compatible with our own transmission we could see the first batch of Altay go into production with an South Korean-Turkish Powerpack until BATU is ready for serial production.

Or Doosan+S&T South Korean Powerpack(if the S&T Transmission holds up in tests) until a fully indigenous Powerpack is ready (BATU+Transmission).

Well, there goes my dreams of a CVT transmission...

M60s and the M48s are going to be retired and sold as surplus to other countries I think.

Too bad the transmission tender required foreign cooperation, we could probably make it ourselves already despite lack of prior experience. I feel that Mr. Osman Dur was not happy about that condition.

In the future foreign involvement shouldn't be required in any of the tenders but should be left open as optional.

We were going to make it ourselves, it was going to be a CVT transmission. Like the kind the Japs use, but I guess a tall task with limited time available.

Well domestic is good while at the same time foreign cooperation speeds shit up.

Honestly the m60s and m48s need their long overdue retirement.

The altay program has already caused many people to pull their hairs out. I mean we just want our newer tanks. The Germans fcked us over.

OOoo.. Think of the possibilities! We have hundreds of M60 tanks that could be modernised, cannon, armour and even UTKU 1000HP Powerpack! We could transfer these tanks to KKTC.
We want PattonTay.. Put unmanned 120mm Altay Turret on M48s, 1000 Hp powerpack.. Stamp and APS

BTW this video shows Sabra M60TM, we still don't know whether they go with M60A3 modernisation. Does Sabra's have Israeli FCS before?

To be honest, we don't have Mechanized or Tank divisions, relying on Turkish Troops' Support for that role. Cyprus is also too small for Tank Battles, better we go with UAVs and Urban Fighting stuff.

Back in the days, when AKP hadn't been strangled TRNC, Turkey was funding defence budget of Security Forces Command (Güv. KK).. There was a time (like 5-6 years ago) we were considering to buy UAVs (Anka) and Nurol Ejders with surplus budget, but now just struggling to pay salaries haha.

FCS change is most likely related with this

Nope, I do not think so, even Leopard 2A4's popped up like melons against ATGM's. Won't even want to think about Leopard 1
