This machine will become a real monster when completed. It will give too much pain to the enemy. It will probably be the last silhouette enemy would like to see in battlefield. With DIRCM, complete electronic warfare suits, 30mm canon, 6 weapon station, MMW radar, special longer range missiles and loitering munitions developed for Atak2...

Congratulations TUSAŞ

I agree that its function is more important than its appearance, but it didnt deserve such an ugly design. As if an extra effort was made to make it ugly

Also, people were right. The machine gun and E/O is in close proximity that E/O would be adversely affected. I believe this is a temporary configuration and E/O will be shifted upward in latter blocks, into a cut-out as shown in mock-ups.
And i think for the ugly design, the navy's requirements has a part in it and that will be sorted out too. They might have attempted to make it self-buoyant and stable.

They've changed the nose section undercut from being 90 degrees straight inwards to being angled which is now more aerodynamic. From profile looks the stubbiness of the nose is again a better choice for sidewise wind drag aspects than being pointy. It may look like a boxer with a broken nose but it certainly is more bad-ass in its current incarnation. The FLIR inset seems to have more room to go in further in order to distance it more from the gun.

Atak2
  • Design team of 500 engineers and a total of 1500 personnel work at Atak2
  • 11.5t MTOW
  • 1.5t useful payload
  • 175knots speed target.
We can also understand that the T-925, which will use the same engine and transmission, will be a helicopter well over 10 tonnes.

Previous Atak2 design hasnt been modified but it has been radically changed for a reason. There is a will/requirement behind this change so don't care on the shapes of sections too much in this period.
First of all, cockpit sections were raised and in this way, a larger area was obtained at the bottom of cockpit. This part was extended to the sides as well.

With the elevation of the cockpit sections, an extra space was obtained in the head section as well. The section under the head was rounded up and optics were placed accordingly. Currently, shape given to the area between nose and gunner cockpit seems strange to people but this area is most likely to be used for different sensors in the future.

This helicopter is also designed according to the demands of the Navy. It is a process and it will eventually take its final form according to wishes of its customers. Currently, what is desired is to provide a safe helicopter flight engine/transmission and rotor compatibility. In the next process, the issue of different sensors and the functionality of all these sensors together will be on the agenda. Hasty comments can lead to false conclusions regarding this project since as far as I see even the gun is a mock-up.

The nose is so weird. With the gigantic FLIR, the 30mm gun is positioned very close. In flights to be made with the nose pointing forward, both the gun barrel cannot rise enough and the hot gases coming out of the barrel can damage the FLIR. In this case, two possibilities come to my mind: a) The situation is temporary and this layout will change in future prototypes. Or b) Radar is placed in the nose and the mobility of the gun is compromised.

Gun can point itself forward when flying forward imo, nose is angled upwards and there is more room for elevation

In my opinion, the three main reasons for the ugly design are the improvements in survivability over the first ATAK-II design, the significant increase in the room for embedded avionics, especially since it will be the main attack helicopter of the navy. It is a much more armoured helicopter than the ATAK-I, and the third reason is probably related to the engine choice. In other words, I cannot explain in any other way why 50-70 cm of space could not be created in the nose even for FLIR. If the engineers involved in the design did not reserve the nose section for hand luggage, there must be a reason for the FLIR to be placed under the nose.

There is written "Experimental" on ATAK II. I think we will see considerable design changes on the 1st prototype.

Actually, "ugliness" is a matter of photography. I think our comments will change when it's completed. I think these photos will change your mind.

Another noteworthy feature of the nose cone is its multi-surface design with sharp corner angles as well as being completely free of FLIR. This may indicate that the aircraft has been subjected to front-section radar optimisation studies. What you think you are seeing radar may be a small helicopter, but what is engaging you may actually be ATAK-II. One of the very special approaches developed for the ATAK-II will be the BLOS attack capability and loitering systems.

I'm not talking about a complete optimisation here, I'm just speculating on the nose geometry.
