According to the New York Times' allegation based on sources in Baku, Putin gave Aliyev an ultimatum on the night of the tripartite agreement on Karabakh: Stop the operations after taking Shusha or the Russian army will intervene.

That night, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan announced that the Russian Mi-24 was "accidentally" shot down by Azerbaijan.

Still, it doesn't really matter. What matters most is the outcome:

• - Azerbaijan got most of the rest of the territories without bloodshed, or wasting a single bullet.
• - Kept all the booty it's got from fleeing Armenians.
• - Gained a lot of experience in modern and drone warfare.
• - Got Turkey involved in the peace-keeping process.
• - Armenians shouting "genocide" only weakened their case against Turks.
• - Turkish defence products were tested and passed with merit.
• - Turkish defence products were showcased and got a lot of positive exposure. (free advertisement)
• - Hostile countries who took Armenia's side got a dose of bitter medicine. (UAE, KSA, France etc.)
• - Turkish-Azerbaijani alliance grew stronger than ever and the brotherly sentiment can be seen with the Turkish flag being waved and hoisted everywhere from battlefields to the residential streets.
• - The whole world (albeit silent) had witnessed the rockets launched into residetial areas by Armenia, and their barbarism regarding cultural and religious sites and monuments, animals and even their own soldier carcasses.

All in all, a good outcome!

I'm sure there are other points missing there too but this one is a very important one!

It would be wrong to include India in this list of "taking Armenia side"...esp alongside level of M.E rivals (to Turkey) in recent times and France (where senate near fully voted to recognise N-K as part of Armenia) or say Iran which allowed its airspace to be used to replenish Armenia in the conflict...and russia which conducted these replenishments and has intervened now pushing its weight around to keep N-K status with Armenia effectively.

You also left out China, EU, US ..... if we are going to go by internet/social media voices etc (if that is the standard we are going with)...all of which did that in much greater intensity than Indian public.

Indian govt has been neutral on this issue. At larger context it does not for example recognize Armenian terminology for events of 1915 - 1917.

India holds a certain historical relationship with Armenian people...but that is in people - people realm....and to prioritise that way, would mean putting every EU country that calls 1915-1917 the Armenian Genocide well before India in hostility vis-a-vis this situation in the area....same goes for US, Canada too.

Alright mate, you're right.
I thought India took sides because of the Pakistani position which was with Azerbaijan. My bad.

It definitely the thing that takes on partisan airs on the internet mobs and media noises etc (i.e enemy picks A, so I got to pick B the opponent automatically)....but its slippery slope in general for geopolitics. For that I prefer to go by highest representation of the country, the govt etc....that is where the major policy and relations contours and framework is set.

India intrinsically would have a major problem with Armenia situation w.r.t N.K (going past everything) given what application of official support would mean to its own Kashmir argument as just one example.

This is why in general every country in world (except Armenia) recognises N-K as part of Azerbaijan more broadly....even Russia (and importantly w.r.t its defence agreements with Armenia concerning what it recognises as Armenia proper).

The country that has come closest now to changing its policy on that is France...given its senate vote. Turkey and Azerbaijan must take note of that....and share some large concern on that trend there.

But I believe in France the President and lower house will not follow suit.

@ukrainealliance : The next step of this is to "distribute a Russian passport for places where Russian is spoken", and the next step is to "settle in the region to protect the interests of the people who speak Russian and have a Russian passport". Classical Russian strategy.

Surely that is something Azerbaycan decides, and they would hopefully not decide that ?

Azerbaijan in order to have the power to decide have to enforce the rule of law in all the areas in Karabakh as soon as possible. In a legal way it was 30 years of decision by Azerbaijan but only forces on the ground are talking and able to enforce the reality. The Russians are playing the game like Harutunyan and the whole "Artsakh" authority have some legal power in Hankendi which is not true. Armenian mainland, Russia and "Artsakh" administration have very close contacts on daily basis. I really don't like the look of it. Azerbaijan and Turkey have to play smart and fast within the internal law of Azerbaijan in order to prevent another status quo or even worst another South Ossetia scenario.
