If this is true... I wonder how it feels like to live this long, what thoughts do you develop over such a time frame and what your beliefs are

Oldest person I ever interacted with at length was my great grandpa who lived near to 100 years old.

He had uncomfy relationship with my branch of family (given close dear proximity in earlier years and a sour family drama that upset it) at that stage of life.....but he opened up to me as kind of way (I figure in hindsight as I was too young to know any of this back then) of making amends for that. I guess its lot easier with a kid...that reminded him of simpler earlier time.

But most of how his thoughts, demeanour and perspective changed was given over longer time by my parents.... the inner layers to the oak tree I remember. It is considerably different for each person....we tend to think all elder folk are somewhat the same by virtue of ripe age.....but they are incredibly different IMO just like at any other age.

The other "oldest" person I talked with (outside family and when I was far older myself) was close friend's grandma, some of the account found (in the middle somewhere) here:

BTW, w.r.t my "oor-appa" great-grandpa....he had a grandfather clock (its still there in another family branch house today and when there I look upon it and remember him). It somewhat reminds me of this folk song I learned in school...we would sing at assembly fairly regularly:

I am 50 years short.

Would my perspective on how views change help? :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Yes. 🍿

They shifted from a military school's regimented thinking to an outraged Marxist but not party member to an increasingly committed to the rule of law, and to the primacy of the individual, rather than any group, in the determination of rights to be preserved, even if those have to be fought for.

Before the military school, there was not much orientation or bearing; there was a general expectation that after getting back from school, there would be extracurricular reading, but that was it. At that school, it was drilled in, 24 x 7,
  • The safety, honour and welfare of your country comes first, always and every time
  • The honour, welfare and comfort of your men comes next
  • Your own ease, comfort and safety comes last, always and every time
Simple rules.

Finding out that the world was organised very badly outside these structured places was a shocker and brought an inevitable revolt. Then came the rude awakening, when it turned out that for every ideal-inspired, ardent young soul, there were ten armed thugs who used politics as a convenient vehicle to plunder and loot.

Getting to where I am today took a long time and a long journey.

China knows that the world would be watching a war with Taiwan, watching it even more closely than what's currently happening in Ukraine. The CCP knows this and the propaganda value that can be derived from it.
If they perform according to plan and have the island under control as soon as possible, then the world would take the PLA as a serious force to be reckoned with, and the CCP would exploit this victory for all that it's worth, both at home and abroad.
Should they not perform according to plan and the whole thing turns out like Ukraine did to Russia... well, that would be another rallying cry for the west, a serious blow to the party's prestige and could probably even lead to a serious challenge to CCP rule surfacing.

That the next available opportunity for war could be used isn't that unlikely.
Xi may have to do something (attacking someone, specially TW) to prove that he is still a strong leader and not weaker than Putin.

As we know, Russia is building a new air base in Laos and this air base is a serious threat to CN just like Soviet air base in Cam Ranh of VN during 80s . CN will be sandwiched again.

If Russia successfully restore Soviet's power (by taking control of Ukraine), then CN's nightmare is coming so close.

The construction of an airbase by the Russian Aerospace Forces in Laos will change the situation in the region, especially the policies of China and the US.

The Russian military is trying to expand its presence in different countries around the world, thereby repelling the influence of the US and China, and increasing its dominance in the international arena.

Russia's military has begun clearing unexploded ordnance and landmines left over from the war in Xieng Khouang province to help build a new military base, a new plan to expand military aid to the country. in Southeast Asia.

At the same time, the presence of Russian troops in the region along with Laos is expected to make China wary of realizing its ambitions, and at the same time make it difficult for the US to implement its intentions in the region.

Viva Vietnam just deals with them like VN sappers did lol.
Yep, they just love talking trash instead of real discussion, just like their football team.Instead of pracising hard, CN football team kept boasting to VN as if they are boss and believe they would become Would cup champion soon (they used 3,4 Brazil born players in the team ), finally, they lost 3-1 to VN

If you could go back 50 years, and tell your younger self about this, how do you imagine this interaction would go? And if you were to live another 50 years, what do you think your worldview would look by then?

And which time of your life do you consider to be the most important one, where your learning and experiences have shaped you the most?

True, that airbase does change up the strategic picture of SE Asia, but we can't forget that it's just one airbase.

But Russia doesn't regain the power of the USSR when (should) it annexes Ukraine, it's demographics and economy can't support any such venture. China on the other hand has grown immensely in power, and has more capability than it ever did during the cold war. It's hasn't gotten any recent war experience and all its shiny new equipment hasn't been put to use, but there's a few opportunities for that to change.

My younger self, it is to be hoped, would say, "Good for you! You didn't compromise."
My older self would say, "That's fine, but you could have taken better care of your money."

Russian air base in Laos is quite close to Malacca strait (abt 2,500km within the range of Russian jet fighters ) and Russia air force can block Malacca strait when having bigger conflict with US-China.

SO, if Xi do Nothing, then he only can wish Russia will not bully CN (like Soviet did ) by blocking Malacca strait where abt 70 % of CN merchant ships must pass throught.

Those altyn helmets were popular in yugoslavia back in the day too:

This helmet is associated with Slavic armies until you find out the helmet comes from Switzerland. Born out of counter terrorism due to the munich massacre.

Turkish gendarmerie also used those helmets in the 80s and early 90s. But it seems they are phased out for good 😢

Ha, from that I take that your younger self was a bit stubborn about his principles? Got any advice for the younger folks here, about what to do and what not do with your time?

Gonna be doing this one a bit later
IMO, it all becomes lot easier to understand when you factor in most people are tribal first (and they pick and choose whatever is easiest and most convenient for it....even while rejecting whatever other brazen or nuanced forms of it depending on their taste and experience).

My buddy @Deliorman put his take on prevalence at about 60%....and I think thats in the ballpark....and quite possibly lot higher.

But you factor that in first, it mimics the importance of understanding arithmetic and algebra to learn the larger math world.

I feel this is going to stay with us eternally as we are deep in our psyche tribal (the degrees for later life simply vary)....inherited by how we come into existence...dependent on others (i.e family) for security, nourishment, learning....everything.

This merely extends to whom that family was dependent on....our need/realisation grows to include such things as higher powers, larger tribes and so on.

Only a minority of people scale enough high mountains to expand their horizons (on such things) well past the norm (of level ground preference and comfort)....but even then there is limitation by curvature of Earth in most cases.
That's true, and I've tried to factor it in, but as with the whole democracy post, this was all a rather generalized theorizing that I try to separate from real world conditions. It shouldn't be seen as any attempt to implement a democratic system, but rather as an attempt to define and understand some of the fundamental structures that should be part of any democratic nation or community really.

The tribalism we can observe in communities around the world is a self-perpetuating system that won't go away, it's an integral part of humanity. Would take a complete overhaul of the biological human to achieve anything like it.

Democracy has always been given a spanking (since it first spawned, grew and now established in large degree as a reality) and it dishes it out back in various ways too. Like any large thing that exists.
Yes, definitely, just wanted to illustrate a rather tumultuous decade for democracy and the types of leaders that emerged with it. India and Modi is another example, but here you, @Joe Shearer other indian members have a vastly better understanding than I will ever achieve, so I shall remain quiet on that front.
Give me another decade, and I will give you other names....with the same issues heh.

Things appear closer and intense in the current time horizon....but they are always there. Further away they get as they recede, they get normalised (only the bright and dark bits offer some sinusoidal variance).

One Canadian band self-depricated their country as recurring landscape of "rocks and trees and trees and rocks and rocks and trees and trees and rocks....and ....water"... just like you see when you are out on a drive here.

But I feel thats true in a much larger sense for the human species too as it travels through time.

The real large "carrier" things (somewhat like a fourier series) are essentially dictated by underlying human psychological response/amnesia in the bulk of the population (i.e what those rocks and trees and watterrrr mean to us in that within horizon instance)

This amplitude (of perceived response and consequence) increases somewhat noticeably though, as the transmittance ability (communication) of the population grows evermore relevant.
Sociology is generally an academic discipline that is interesting, getting a macro-oversight of people and how responses in relation to power and position form.
Its a schrodinger situation. If you dont want to find stuff out, keep the (info) box closed firmly as you can.

But the damage of doing it this (totalitarian) way is long term thing.

There is real problematic detritus surfacing now inside the CCP (from the larger societal reality and response) of stuff they did 20 - 30 years back. This one will add to that.

I am still a staunch believer in the liberal democratic system....a lot more noise and effect is generated in the short term, but less accumulates in brittle way IMO.
This desire for a more authoritarian way of leadership grew within me because I was disgusted at the way people, both in a general context but especially family relations, were handling the restrictions. It struck me as legitimately ridiculous that so many couldn't understand why you should wear a mask, and what this is good for. It wasn't a type of situation where it happened once or twice, but rather day in day out the same old shtick, and this disregard for simple and logical rules.

It's not that I don't appreciate the freedoms that come with a democratic, liberal system, because I do and I know to value them, but I thought the grass to be greener on the other side due to me starting to get paranoid and my interpersonal relations breaking down with a few people, because of the pandemic. Nothing I'm proud of, and looking back I was getting too paranoid, but I can't change the past.

Being stubborn about one's principles does not - should not! - preclude periods of silence, while one plans an organised retirement. My biggest mistake - many times repeated, always regretted.

That is very good advice... hope everything goes well for you though! Should I make to your age, then I'll keep that in mind, but there are no guarantees in life, so I think it's best to appreciate what one has, it could always go worse in some way

@Rajaraja Chola @Milspec @suryakiran et al.

Surely IK caesar drama + DHA degeneracy wars.... is good (karmic) note to end things on (at clown forum), and just observe with popcorn from time to time as required/wanted?

The forum administration there is fully involved in persistent false flag multi-accounting in case you guys dont know.

just one (out of many) recent example: halfmoon-suvarna-akshay-<insert name>

Worst part is seeing whomever this "drjekyll" and "wood" ppl are.... fall for that stuff and play right into it.

Even when the place was "better"...they indulged this stuff (I brought it up with the webby there who would selectively consider A but not B etc.... and in hindsight its very clear he is part of its cultivation, all to be more "en vogue" with twitter trolling quantity et al).

So why waste time there and give them patronage knowing this is their model/agenda?...and now a reality check karma arrives where it matters yet again?

Last word drama is worth it? Some vice-addiction?

I understand why folks like Joe explore depths of atlantis up close to maybe remember things by and play sports with all that lurk in parts of it.... but there is no sane reason I can figure out for most of rest of you (but possibly I dont know you well enough either).

Fellow asserted ummah bros (Turks , Indonesians) left cold turkey and en masse (they finally sniffed what was up, decided enough is enough and just left to do something far better here)....yet some bollywood brigade are stuck there like an opium stench...no matter the crap and abuse thrown their way (and many of you surely know much more thats happened).

Yet you and many others persist there....

IMO, Best to leave and tell others like you why. .... you are just propping up a smashed relic and the foul gunk it contained all along.

Disturbing. Why not let adversary simply realise its aukat (which is proceeding swimmingly if you let it) itself?

You staunchly decide to remain part of the problem (with them and with us).... rather than just focus on solutions for us.
