The end of cold war and the decline of Soviet/Russian empire gave we much more safe and freedom and strategic space

But at the same time, because our importance to Westerner for last 200 years was mainly blocked the expansionism of Russia, by now they will break up with Türkiye. They are focus on block Chinese empire in far east.

No, but I believe the threat of escalation with Russia who has nukes is what reduces the EU response with weapons and support for Ukraine
Financical and energy card can easily block Turkiye

Damn that we lost all the oil field in WW1

26 Democratic Senators called on Menendez to resign.

Menendez's political career, once elevated to presidential candidacy, ended in disgrace and disaster. Probably his Armenian wife will divorce him soon. I hope he didn't launder all the bribe money through his wife. lol

Just took a look at Menendez's probable replacements. Two most likely are Ben Cardin and Jeanne Shaheen. Cardin spoke about Kavala back then but he seems much calmer. Shaheen co wrote the bill that removed Turkey from the JSF and also wrote extensively about Op. Peace Spring. Cardin is set to retire in 2025.

Not great, not terrible.
Cardin replaced Menendez, possibly due to seniority of age.

Better outcome so far.

"It is the second time Cardin, a senior senator known for human rights advocacy, replaces fellow Democrat Menendez in committee leadership. Cardin also stepped in from April 2015 to February 2018 after Menendez faced federal corruption charges that were later dropped. At that time Menendez was ranking member, the panel's top member from the minority party."

"Cardin has also broken with Democrats, including in 2015, when he and Menendez were two of only four Democratic senators who voted against Obama's nuclear deal with Iran"

"Cardin's appointment could signal a shift in policy toward Egypt, accused of bribing Menendez to use his influence on Egypt's behalf. Cardin criticized Biden's decision this month to release $235 million in military aid to Egypt."

Not sure if good news for us but definitely bad news for Egyptians lol

In March 2023, an arbitral tribunal finally issued an award in the first dispute in Iraq’s favour. The tribunal also ordered Turkey to pay Iraq approximately $2 billion in damages, and also ordered Iraq to pay around $500 million in damages to Turkey for a variety of costs and expenses. The second dispute for the period 2018-2022 is expected to lead to a similar financial award in Iraq’s favour, without any corresponding amount in Turkey’s favour.

As if that wasn’t peculiar enough, Turkey also stated behind the scenes that it would not reopen the pipeline until a number of conditions were met, including that Iraq abandon its second claim for 2018-2022. The closure means that Iraq has lost approximately $6bn in lost profit, an amount that it is probably entitled to recover from Turkey under the ITP Agreement. At the time of writing, the pipeline remains closed.

8 billion dollars total lmao

“Within this week, we will start operating the Iraq Turkey pipeline after resuming operations, it will be able to supply half a million barrels, almost, to global oil markets”, Bayraktar said during the ADIPEC conference in Abu Dhabi.

Turkey has been a reliable transit route for oil and gas, he added.

Seems in order to not lose reputation as an unreliable transit route the pipeline is being opened regardless of these payments.

But

Iraq wants the money first.

Given the recent PKK attack on the Turkish parliament, I went through my archive of papers on larger subject and came across this one written in 87 (when the Iran-Iraq war still had not concluded and was still often referred to as the "Gulf war" given the following wars had not occurred yet).

Going through my larger archive, I couldn't help notice again how the western media (separate to this paper and others produced within Turkiye) changed its approach in covering the issues at hand from especially the 70s to 80s to 90s and 00s and then present....as their overall geopolitical relationship with Turkiye and neighbourhood changed....and the good cop bad cop routine shifted in nature and ratio.

Any comments, further perspective or how you rate the paper overall are welcome.

France won't threaten Turkey with nukes.
Can't reliably say that they won't. They have a HUGE chip on their shoulder and a massive superiority complex. Which geopoliticallly makes them batshit insane.
