(30 Sep 2021) High in a rocky Himalayan mountain range in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir, hundreds of people are working on an ambitious project to drill tunnels and construct bridges to connect the Kashmir Valley with Ladakh, a cold-desert region isolated half the year because massive snowfall.

Strategically important Ladakh shares de facto borders with Pakistan and China and currently depends on air supplies for about six months of the year. Officials say a 6.5-kilometer (4-mile) tunnel, the first of four, is already complete and will make the resort town of Sonamarg accessible during the winter months for the first time. Sonamarg marks the end of conifer-bearing mountains before Ladakh begins across the rocky Zojila mountain pass.

The $932 million project’s last tunnel, about 14 kilometers (9 miles) long, will bypass the challenging Zojila pass and connect Sonamarg with Ladakh. Indian and Chinese soldiers have been engaged in a sometimes violent standoff in the Karakoram mountains in Ladakh for over 16 months along their de facto border, called the Line of Actual Control. Both countries have stationed tens of thousands of soldiers there, backed by artillery, tanks and fighter jets. Indian military planners view the tunnel project as extremely important for Ladakh.

Experts say it will provide logistics flexibility to the military and give it operational and strategic mobility. Prasanth Kumar, Deputy General Manager of Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL), the company which is constructing the project, said “any sort of army machinery can be transported 365 days and without any hurdles” once the tunnel is completed.

Officials say it will be India’s longest and highest tunnel at more than 11,500 feet (3,485 meters). “This is a state of the art project," said India's road transport and highways minister, Nitin Gadkari, on a visit to the project site this week. The Zojila part of the tunnel is to be functional in 2026, but Gadkari said he hopes the work will be finished before 2024 general elections.

We always stand by Kashmiri people.

That is fine. We stand by Baloch, Sindhi and Pakthun people and their self-determination movements too.

May their struggle prevail like that of "East Pakistan's" one day.

If you use that word, you better define what it first means to have any sort of consistent framework:

I suggest you read up the extensive literature for both cases and your govt's position on both (in startling hypocritical fashion)

If you don't want to do that and be a hypocrite like your govt, that is your choice.

But it will not be tolerated in this section.

That kind of propaganda can be posted in your country's section instead.

Shameless? You decide.

Hyper-islamist bravery or cowardliness? Again everyone can decide in the end.

But you are all advised to stay away from this section. Don't even look here.

New Delhi:
An army officer and four other soldiers were killed in action during an encounter between security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district on Monday, officials said.

Sources said a heavy gunfight was underway in the Surankote area with at least four to five heavily armed terrorists who crossed into the country a few days ago.

The anti-insurgency operation was launched in a village close to Dera Ki Gali in the early hours following intelligence inputs about their presence, they said.

The hiding terrorists fired on the search parties resulting in a fierce gunfight and critical injuries to a Junior Commissioned Officer or JCO and four other soldiers. They died from their injuries.

The encounter with the terrorists was going on and further details are awaited, a defence spokesperson said.

Officials said there were reports about the presence of a group of heavily-armed terrorists in the Chamrer forest, after they managed to sneak from across the Line of Control a few days ago.

RIP. Now let us wait for dead terrorists with Pakistan passports, Pakistani Rupees and a Pakistani flag on them. That should help investigators to figure out where they came from.

They just don't (seem to) understand how SIGINT and COMINT works in fundamental ways....and how this evidence has long been imputed to US, Israel and other significant allies....and has already taken phase 1 and phase 2 tolls on them...with more phases to come with time (FATF "40 billion USD toll" is just one small sliver of it that they all predictably focus on like moths to single closest flame).

I mean we all saw how it played out with bombay terror attacks with the denial and then acceptance once the evidence and pressure became overbearing and there was enough in the political-DHA web to cleave and exploit to get that admission done and more doors opened (OBL hosting and DHA imprisoning of the Pakistani doctor that helped with the intel all played its hand later too).

But then again the larger crowd of them dont seem to understand how honey-pot nodes work in the internet at large to begin with while they scream like telford-rochdale-bradford types about all manner of things on large compromised servers sitting in the West of all place.....all while living in the west too.

I wouldn't get tied up with with specific folks if they rub you wrong way.....but just focus on larger picture (larger crowd) stuff beyond it....and let time and events play out.

Even as the fragile ceasefire agreement holds ground at the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, “infiltration season” has begun and Pakistan is attempting to push in more hardened and trained terrorists into the Indian side under a new strategy, ThePrint has learnt.

Sources in the defence and security establishment said the terror launch pads across the LoC are full, and attempts are being made to infiltrate from the Kashmir side as well as the Jammu side.

The ceasefire has been holding ground since February this year. There have been two cases of ceasefire violations, but they were very localised, and (took place) primarily because a new unit had taken over on that side,” a source said, referring to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

The source added that while earlier infiltration attempts were stopped, two months back, the Pakistan Army allowed the terrorists to move in and attempt infiltration, while also making it clear that it wouldn’t be able to support them through ceasefire violations.

Now, with winter approaching, the Pakistan Army has fully allowed the terror groups to attempt infiltration, sources said.

“There is greater attempt to infiltrate, but no ceasefire violations. The number of terrorists trying to infiltrate cannot do so without the sanction of the Pakistan Army,” a second source told ThePrint.

Focus on smuggling arms and ammunition
The sources said the primary focus of the Pakistan Army is to push in arms and ammunition more than terrorists themselves. This is why the terrorists attempting infiltration have been found with more weapons and ammunition.

In late September, the Army had foiled an infiltration attempt by killing three heavily armed terrorists at Hatmulla in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Five AK rifles, eight pistols, two IEDs and 69 grenades were recovered from the three terrorists.

Another infiltration attempt was stopped after this in the Uri sector. One of the terrorists killed was someone who looked to be in his late 30s, while another was caught alive.

India Today accessed exclusive details of the meeting that took place on September 21.

Indian intelligence agencies came to know about the confidential meeting between ISI officers and terrorist organisations. Accordingly, the agencies issued an alert, a copy of which is in possession of India Today.

According to the alert, in the meeting, the ISI had prepared a plan to launch large-scale attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. It was purportedly decided in the meeting to do maximum target killings on the Indian side of Kashmir.

It was decided that Kashmiris working with the police, security forces, intelligence departments would have to be killed. Non-Kashmiri people and people associated with the BJP and RSS were also selected as targets during the meeting between ISI officers and leaders of terror groups.

As per the alert, the ISI had made a “hit-list” of 200 people who would be murdered to create tension in the valley. Other than media personnel close to the Indian government and sources and informers of the Indian agencies and security forces, the list allegedly included names of many Kashmiri Pandits who have been actively advocating for the return of Pandits to Kashmir.

In a significant step towards developing the industrial sector and other business enterprises in the Union Territory, the Jammu and Kashmir administration on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Dubai government for development of real estate, industrial parks, and more.

Talking about the significance of the MoU, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal said that with the signing of the MoU with the Dubai government, the world has started to recognize the pace with which Jammu and Kashmir is traversing on the development bandwagon.

“This MoU gives out a strong signal to the entire world that the way India is transforming into a global power, Jammu & Kashmir is having a significant role into that as well,” Piyush Goyal said.

The groundwork for the MoU was prepared during the minister’s visit to Dubai between October 1-3 on the sidelines of the inauguration of the India pavilion at Dubai Expo 2020.

The MoU with the government of Dubai covers real estate development, industrial parks, IT towers, multipurpose towers, logistics, medical college, super specialty hospital and more.

The Central government hopes that the MoU will prove to be a milestone after which the investment will pour in from around the globe, ushering in a big developmental push.

Good to see, UAE is turning into solid partner and ally for India.

There is lot to be done in all parts of India (with all countries of the world) if on a first basis they don't hypocritically insert themselves into India's internal affairs.

We appreciate the GCC continued partnership in arenas like FATF...and continued deporting and reduction of labour and import trade from the countries of concern regarding this.

We expect more to continue on these fronts as well.

It is best to get action done here and let the 10000-post spam types (failures in real life inevitably) throw a fit about "arabs" as certain realities dawn all too uncomfortably that they wont introspect themselves.

Such statements carry no weight , and not sure who needs POK , it will be better if we manage properly what we already have

3 class 10 students nabbed in J&K trying to cross over to PoK for arms training to join back terrorism in Valley
In a statement, Jammu and Kashmir Police said that the three youth – all 16-year-olds, had established contact with a terrorist commander named Tayab Farroqi, operating from Pakistan.

In a statement, police said that the three youth – all 16-year-olds and students of class 10, had established contact with a terrorist commander named Tayab Farroqi, operating from Pakistan. They were on their way to meet him by crossing the LoC via Kupwara and take illegal training in handling of arms and ammunition for joining terrorism back in Jammu and Kashmir.

The three individuals have been identified as Furqan Sultan Khanday (16), Furqan Nazir Khanday (16), and Kamran Sajad Sheikh (16). All of them hail from Pulwama district in the Valley.

Following interrogation, the police found that the teenagers were radicalised by Farroqi through social media platforms.

Owing to their young age, Jammu and Kashmir Police decided to counsel them to give them a chance to reform into responsible and peace-abiding citizens. They were handed over to their parents, the statement said.
