Just out interest does anyone know the exact Turkmen population of Syria?

It is estimated to number around 3 million (2000-2010 estimates) and is the largest segment after the Sunni Arabs. However, since the Baathist regime ignored the Turkmen presence, they were 'mostly' seen as part of the Arab population, so it is difficult to say the exact population. Estimates are based on towns and cities with dense Turkmen settlements and historical tribes. Some Turkmen people do not speak Turkish and have been subjected to heavy assimilation policies for several generations, yet they have never rebelled against the state in Syrian history. Turkmens took up arms once, and they overthrew the Baath regime that time. (In sum, despite all the challenges, Syrian Turkmens are more successful in preserving their cultural heritage than Lebanese and Palestinian Turkmens or from Egypt's Turks.)

The last thing they want is Turkmen independence. Just imagine if they were independent in both Syria and Iraq... It would essentially encircle Iran's Turkic population areas and they would be next to gain independence. From there a bridge to central asia would be inevitable. The world would wake up to a unified Turkic entity that would challenge the current order. Neither China, Russia nor the west wants this. Neither do their allies.

I also want to add that there's been a recent push to secularize Iran. This isn't in our interests, essentially it means that the west is ready to strengthen and support them when the time comes. This way they can act as a bulwark against Turkic expansion. I guess you could say they want to form a second, much larger and much more organized version of the SDF. All against Turkish and Turkic interests.

To be honest Syrian Turkmens were called terrorists and Jihadists by both Russian and Western Media.

Whole world easily called them terrorists despite Syrian Turkmens were only fighting for their lands, dignity, their religion, their honour, their identity and their culture against the onlaught of Assad, Russia, Iran, Pkk and Isis.

Still Western media easily parroted Russian propaganda against Syrian Turkmens.

Syrian Turkmens and the Iraqi Turkmens are both heirs of the Seljuks and the Ottomans.

Turks of Turkiye have a really close kinship with them. We see them as extensions of our peoples.

This includes Azerbaijan due to the whole heritage of Oghuz Turks.

Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov says Russia has established direct contacts with the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in a bid to maintain its military bases in the Arab country despite the fall of the Syrian government.
Russia hopes to keep its military bases in Syria as they are important in the fight against terrorism, Bogdanov said, Interfax news agency reported on Friday.
The senior Russian diplomat noted that contacts with HTS were “proceeding in constructive fashion.”
Russia, Bogdanov said, hopes the group would fulfill its pledges to “guard against all excesses”, maintain order and ensure the safety of diplomats and other foreigners.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has condemned in the strongest terms Israel’s strikes on Syria and the creation of a “buffer zone” along the occupied Golan Heights.
Moscow, he said, aims to maintain its two military bases in Syria – a naval base in Tartus city on the Mediterranean coast and Hmeimim Air Base southeast of the port city of Latakia – to continue “fighting international terrorism.”
“The bases are still there, where they were on Syrian territory. No other decisions have been made for the moment,” Bogdanov was quoted as saying.
“They were there at the Syrians’ request with the aim of fighting terrorists from Daesh. I am proceeding on the basis of the notion that everyone agrees that the fight against terrorism, and what remains of Daesh, is not over.”
Maintaining the fight, he said, “requires collective efforts and, in this connection, our presence and the Hmeimim base played an important role in the context of the overall fight against international terrorism.”
Militants launched a surprise two-pronged attack on Syria’s northwestern city of Aleppo and the countryside around Idlib on November 27. They marched southward to seize control of several major cities, including Hama, Homs, Dara’a, and Suwayda, before entering and capturing the capital Damascus early on December 8, unseating the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

The interim government is making a big mistake. No, the Russians will stay in their bases and watch the Israeli aggression, as they have not interfered before. If the Russians maintain the same privileges, the Tartus base will allow Russia to continue its covert operations inside Syria, where some paramilitary organizations will continue to transport mercenaries and weapons to Africa, over Syria.

They could have made the military bases available only for joint use by a group of countries willing to support Syria, such as the 'Friends of Syria', or better yet, they could have been made available to a 'temporary' UN peacekeeping force until the Syrian state builds up its air force and navy. Keeping these bases completely inactive and maintaining the Russian presence in them will not make a daramtic difference in terms of Israeli aggression, but will be the kiss of life to keep Russia's ambitions in Syria alive. I would go further and say that this nonsense idea is most likely mediated by the Turkish side.

While these were being loaded from Syrian ports and piers and exiting Syrian territorial waters, was it possible that Russia was unaware of all this trade worth tens of billions? No, it was not. Unless the base is manned by SNA and crew as well. It would be a mistake to let Russia manage two bases. If Russia accepts patroling southern Syria airspace and keep Israel away. That could work. Remember Russia has no obligation to Syria once Assad turned tail and ran away. HTS should have made an announcement once they marched to homs that let Russia know the future potential if they stay neutral or protect the airspace. Instead Russia bailed and Israel bombed all SAM and AD sites. Loss of such potential.

Sadly at this time Syrians have no power over the russian, they can’t start a new war with someone who owns aircrafts and missile power. This also might give an opportunity to pro Assad to rise and rearm them selfs, same goes to Israel aggression issue.

At this time Syrians will suck it and focus on rebuilding a 80% of Syria, otherwise it will be 0%
