An era is coming to a close in the Italian navy. The light aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi is set to be decommissioned as part of Italy's massive modernization plan. MaviVatan.net has prepared a good article on this subject, you can access it from the relevant link.

I would like to take this opportunity to recall the idea of backing up the TCG Anadolu with a second-hand platform, which has been on the agenda every few years period. In fact, as you know this issue was even brought to the British Parliament during the sale progress of HMS Ocean.

Giuseppe Garibaldi was not as new as Ocean, but it was one of the flagship platforms of the Italian navy. It should be underlined that the Italians have a special place among NATO navies in terms of maintenance and upkeep. There are two more important details about this ship. The first is that with this ship, AV-8B Harrier IIs will also be decommissioned. The second is the ship's mission description and the systems it carries in relation to the doctrinal approach of the Italian navy.

Giuseppe Garibaldi underwent a major modernization in 2003 and is essentially an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) ship. In peacetime, it has the capability to deploy without the need for huge task forces, including in risky areas. If asked for wartime, it is completly another discussion and probably we should forget about all the task force structures that already exist.

What can Giuseppe Garibaldi bring to the Turkish Navy? If it is purchased with Harriers, it will enable the start of combatant(I mean not drones) naval aviation at the lowest cost. Until it reaches the Turkish-type aircraft carrier, it provides power projection and continuity in the relevant task forces by backing up the Anadolu LHD/LAC. Italy and the UK are positively differentiated from other European countries by their maximum alignment with Turkish foreign policy. We can use this ship and the aircraft on it as a school- until they are replaced by indigenous systems and, and we can also use it effectively in times of crisis with relatively trouble-free logistical support.

I heard the Harriers were expensive to maintain and upkeep.

Then again all vtol planes are expensive and complex.

Turkish navy does need naval aviation I dont mean helicopters I mean jets.

We only need them for our recycling industry. We should put all our money on our own development work. It is mere months before TB3, Kızılelma and DİHA take to the skies among others. We don't need anything that we don't make and we can make anything that we need.

Which Harriers do Italians have ? Us made or English ones?

It could be a lifesaver if it was available 4-5 years ago to help naval aviation and amphibious task force to mature. But Anadolu will be commissioned before June 2023 which is likely before delivery of the mentioned vessel and it is not feasible to upgrade an aged ship with new electronics to commonize with Anadolu, so that it can be used as a trainer and test platform.

Since chances of TN operating F-35B is pretty weak (eventhough they would love to, but the political climate), there is no point on upkeeping aged Harriers.

However, for Harriers, only if they could offer a life extension upgrade with Turkish equipments and weapons (not likely due to the US), then it may gain some attraction. For the ship herself, there is no chance.

Unfortunately without the F-35B, the chance for Turkish navy to develop a true carrier borne aviation in the short term has been dashed, without the F-35B or the AV-8 on board, the Garibaldi doesn't offer more capabilities than the Anadolu.

The Ministry of National Defense is purchasing Type-23 frigates from the British Royal Navy.

After the visit of Minister of National Defense Hulusi Akar, who met with his British counterpart Ben Wallace the previous day, it was learned that he made a purchase agreement for the Type-23 frigates, which are used in active duty in the Royal Navy and currently have 12 in their navy. WTF, perhaps there is an urgent need for specialized ships or what. Really unexpected, right?

Not the person who has been telling TN will get 5000+ tons frigate.

However, i can not confirm type-23 deal.

These ships have a great armament and are proven ships. It would be great if we could get 2 or 3 of these.

Could be only for training and test purposes as well but i am doubting this.

Maybe as 'sinkex target',but again we have one or two OHPs waiting for sinkex.

Makes no sense, won't they be replaced by Type 31 in the near future? Why would we buy scrap when the Navy just can order more I-Class, which may be more expensive but at least newer and built in country with Turkish, mainly, subsystems.

This Akar's second visit to Britain in short time though, something is going on but is more likely related to the Air Force then to the Navy.

EDIT: The youngest would be two decades old and the oldest over three. I don't see the Navy having any interest in them. Especially because you would need to open another logistic line to operate them. Even if Britain offered them cheap.

And yes I know these are closer to 5000Ton while I-Class is to 3000Ton.

5000t is located between Tf2000 and I class. Mekos are being upgraded. The first ship of I class will enter the inventory at the end of this year. With the entry of TCG Anadolu into the inventory, the protection of this ship will also be in question. Probably there is an urgent need for a missile frigate and such an interim solution may have been applied to meet this need. Let's see what we will hear about urgebt need of air forces in the coming days.

Maybe replacing some Gabya or as interim solution since Barbaros-class gets it's MLU?
