Most of Mainland ASEAN pretty much under chinese sphere of influences. A civil war is the last thing they want in the area.

While we should not take sides with any groups we should definetely take advantages of the situation. A civil war may just be the push needed for the QUAD to finally admit the chinese threat and finally take action.

india has already operated israeli medium range air defense system such as barak right ? why don't seek David Sling as an alternative to the S-400 ?

It would have been way I would have personally gone....and it make sense with Indian own BMD+SAM layering heritage (initial BMD seeding tech was israeli i.e elta green pine etc and barak/MRSAM has impressed lot in Indian military too) that has now grown substantially with the PDV etc.

But I guess some experts and lobbies decided S-400 has something of worth and niche in the layer system we are developing this first half of century....and possibly with receding imports/dependance on Russian MIC, a way for India to keep that door open another decade to balance relations with Russia (so they dont get fully on china side).

Ya... Both India and China are supplied by Russia. But, I think (Without data/evidence here. Just a rough guessing) India received more weapons from Russia than China. Is that right?

And also India's relations with Russia are strong if I see it. Joint producing AK-203 is one of them. That are very productive and mutual relations.

Yah I had a look at SIPRI just to see what the numbers were:

As you can see there has been considerable drop for India in last few years (average around 1 billion a year) from the peak of 2010 - 2013 (where it averaged around 3 billion a year).

China's peak was around 2000 - 2006 (I made a bigger table to see) for russian military imports, averaging around 2.5 billion a year then. In recent years they are more or less same as India, importing around 1 billion a year.
