The delegation of Indonesian Islamic Organizations (CSOs) consisting of Muhammadiyah, PBNU and MUI had the opportunity to visit Xinjiang, China to get a close look at the condition of the Xinjiang people, especially Uighur Muslims. During his visit, there were many things that were obtained and seen related to the condition of religious freedom in the Bamboo Curtain country.
The Chairman of MUI's Foreign Relations, Muhyiddin Junaidi said, initially the delegation of Islamic Organizations was invited by the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia to visit the Xinjiang Autonomous Region. (Also read: PP Muhammadiyah Issues 7 Statement on Uighur Muslim Attitudes)
Delegations of Indonesian Islamic Organizations numbered 15 people. Where every mass organization sends 5 people and three journalists from print and electronic media. Arriving in Beijing, the Indonesian Islamic Organizations delegation immediately exchanged with the Ambassador, followed by dinner and gave a brief description of Xinjiang.
"We met with the head of the CIA (China Islamic Association) which happened to be a new council or the Chinese Muslim Association. Not like Muhammadiyah or MUI. He is an extension of the government because there are no government organizations in China. All must be under government control in China," Junaidi said press conference at PP Muhammadiyah Office, Jakarta, Monday (12/16/2019).
When meeting with the CIA,
the suspicions of Indonesian Islamic organizations' suspicions arose. It began when a delegation of Islamic Organizations wanted to be delivered to the nearest mosque for prayer in congregation but was not permitted, saying bad weather condition as a reason. In fact, a guest request is usually granted or obeyed as much as possible even if only delivered to the mosque though. "From that moment on we began to suspect, we entered the hotel, indeed there was already a direction of Qibla in each room but it was clear the original and the new were different. We began to be suspicious," he explained.
Suspicions also arose when a reporter wanted to buy cigarettes out of the hotel, and the CIA representative readily refused to go out and buy him everything he needed.
The reporter returned to the hotel and told this to the Indonesian Islamic Organizations delegation. The next day, the CIA deputy chairman invited to the museum of acts of violence perpetrated by the Uighurs to the community in Xinjiang. "He was not convinced that the violence was carried out by the Uighur community as seen from the picture presented, but the name listed was similar to the Uighur community," he said.
The Indonesian Islamic Organizations delegation also visited other places and they increasingly believed there was no religious freedom there. "Visits to several places, mosques, Islamic institutes have increasingly convinced us that there is no religious freedom. Freedom of religion is rather difficult to prove. Why is that? The Chinese Constitution chapter 2 of article 38 says that the Chinese government gives citizens freedom of religion and non-religion, "he said.
A
fter visiting the re-education center where the residents are Uighurs who practice their religion openly demonstratively. In fact, the constitution in China states, religion is applied in a closed room should not be open space, if taken to an open space is considered radical and should be taken to re-education.
"If you are radically sent to re-education center camps, you will be trained for 1 year there to understand the Chinese constitution and understand Mandarin because most Uighurs don't speak Mandarin. So, during re-education is not allowed to pray, read the Koran, it shouldn't be fasting, eating potluck. That's CCTV every corner. So gadgets should not be, cut off from the outside world. Now that's if you pray in an open space is considered radical, "he continued.
On Friday, Friday prayers are filled with grandparents in the same uniform, no children, young people who carry out worship on constitutional grounds. Because religion after 18 years is only allowed. If there is a mother who teaches religion to her children then it is considered radical. "Sadly, we discussed with the deputy chairman of the CIA. So the prayer was to be held for 8 months, for a month for a year," he explained.
After the visit, the delegation of the Indonesian Islamic Organizations immediately delivered the results of the visit to Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi. There were a number of points conveyed among them, the delegation asked the Chinese government to give freedom to Muslims to carry out their worship openly because it was guaranteed by the UN Charter.
"Yes, we handed it over to Mrs. Retno. There were a lot of points. But I didn't know that Mrs. Retno had summoned the Chinese Ambassador or not or had been submitted or not. "Hopefully the Foreign Minister has delivered the Chinese Ambassador who served in Indonesia," he said.
