Aster-30 Block 2 will have a double stage solid fuel engine with IR + DACS + KV. The missile, which can destroy medium range ballistic missiles (MRBM) which 3000 km range including their decoy heads, in out of the atmosphere at a maximum altitude of 70 km and will be put into service in the ~ 2030s. Turkey wants to be in this project.

SavunmaSanayiST: Turkish defense industry companies continue their efforts to develop systems that will form the Layered Air Defense Umbrella under the leadership of the Defense Industry Presidency. It was recently announced that some changes were made in the HİSAR-A and HİSAR-O projects. Could you summarize the latest situation in both international and national projects in the field of air defense in order to clarify the subject a little more before the public?

Prof. Dr. İsmail DEMİR: By saying “plus” to HİSAR-A and HİSAR-O, we decided to increase their capabilities a little more. Because; Since we think that a protection at the HİSAR-A level, more precisely at the HİSAR-A level defined earlier, will not be very effective in today's operational environment, we have given him a little more capability. Similarly, HİSAR-O was upgraded to a slightly higher capability. Studies on the design requirements of the SUPER system continue, the design emerges.

Of course, the experiences gained in HİSAR-A and HİSAR-O will be transferred there and the construction of the system will continue. As I said, these three projects, HİSAR-A + and HİSAR-O +, are very close to mass production. However, ASELSAN, SAGE and Roketsan are working in close cooperation for the rapid development of SİPER. We tried to give this as short as possible, so we were thinking like the 2022s. We may have a few months delay due to this recent pandemic and embargo. We are working to make up for it.

We haven't developed much of a culture of working as a consortium. It also takes some effort to manage three or more companies together and share business. This system is also being learned. In the next projects, we will be more accustomed to the multi and consortium culture.

Prof. Dr. İsmail DEMİR: Of course there is no problem for HİSARs. We will even give HİSAR-A +. It's stuck on something small like an embargo, but we're also improving it. HİSAR-O + is not too long, we can easily give it in 2022. We're trying to push SIPER a little bit, so that it comes right after. Of course, we can see a little further after the tests regarding the durations begin. For example, we have a clear path for HİSAR-A +, tests have been achieved, we need a large number of subcomponents for mass production. We have a little trouble in terms of numbers in a small sub-component about them, but if the problem is resolved after the production has started, we will continue our way quickly.

Let me recap the most important parts
The Turkish air defense system will consist mainly out of 3 parts: Short (Hisar A+), Medium (Hisar O+) and Long (Hisar U, aka Siper) range parts, like all classical Air defense systems.

To make it clear, Turkey does not design something extra ordinary but similar missiles to other existing missiles of different countries like: IRIS-T (Germany), Mica (France), Spyder (Israel) and CAMM (UK).

So we won't have a "wunderwaffe" air defense system but an air defense system of similar capabilities like the existing modern AD systems

Here mr. Sünetçi made a nice overview of comparence (mind you that not all values of the HISAR system are known, some values* are estimated)

Not mentioned in graph above is the Hisar-U missile that will have an estimated range of 70 - 90km and altitude of 20km+


So now also with the EIRS and STR radars nearing completion our AD system is slowly taking her final form.

All missiles are VLS launched, the sea-based versions will most likely need some minor modifications


Where does the S400 system fit? Well if we regard that "reliable" AD systems need to be layered we can regard:
Layer 1: Spaag systems / MANPADS, like Korkut SPAAG / stinger
Layer 2: short range, low altitude systems, like Hisar A+
Layer 3: Medium range, medium altitude systems, like Hisar O+
Layer 4: Long range, high altitude systems, like Hisar U
Layer 5: very long range, high altitude, like S400
Layer 6: exoatmospheric, like SM-3 missile

FFS stands for Füze Fırlatma Sistemi, there is going to be wheeled version of Hisar A+ too obviously

The Hisar-A and O missile have similar dimensions, I don't think they differ that much in weight.

I just finished reading it, my previous statement is incorrect ;)

In the product brochures prepared by Roketsan and Aselsan, the maximum range of the HİSAR-A System at sea level is 15km and the maximum range of the HİSAR-O System is 25km. The maximum prevention altitude of HİSAR-A was planned as 5km, and the maximum prevention altitude of HİSAR-O Missile was 10km. It was thought that the HİSAR-A Missile had a length of approximately 4m and a weight of 230kg (it is claimed that the total weight with its canister reached 560kg), while the HİSAR-O Missile was approximately 4.5m long and weighed 300kg. According to the information written on the HİSAR-A Missile canister on the HİSAR-A KMOAİHSFS, which was exhibited at the ceremony held in Aselsan's REHİS Presidency facilities in Gölbaşı, Ankara on 12 November 2020, the width of the canister was 550mm, its height was 640mm, and its length was 3.800mm. In the information on the HİSAR-O FFS canister exhibited at the Aselsan booth at IDEF Fuar17, its width was 550mm, its length was 4.650mm and its height was 640mm. In this case, it is possible for the HİSAR-A Missile to have a wingspan of 55-60cm, a length of 3.6m to 3.7m, and a length of HİSAR-O Missile with a wingspan of 55-60cm.

If the altitude ranges of hisar-A+/O+ reach the figures given by I.Sunnetçi (10km and 20km), This will be a perfect, network centric and layered air defence missile system ! 20km altitude equals to 66000ft. This figure will guarantee a certain kill against any flying manned/unmanned object when they enter into effective range of Hisar systems. Most likely, Siper will carry this altitude figure up to 30-35km.

I am really impressed by the technology that is used in the Hisar system. It has datalink+IIR/RF guidance while the seeker head is protected by a cover that gets separated when the missile is in terminal phase, to protect the IIR seeker from thermal stresses/fog. Further more it has in flight re-targeting capability to guide to another target if need be. And at last, it has a dual-pulse engine that is used in the most efficient way to maximize the possibility of interception.

And it doesn't stop there. In order to further improve the range and altitude, weight saving measures had to be implemented for the '+' version
