Their weights are similar but PT-6 generates more than 4x the power than the PD-170. As a prototype engine it's fine but we really need to step it up here. Turboprops should be simpler than turbofan engines after all.There is a turboprop UAV project it is alive and kicking. Aksungur performed better than expected so there was an internal discussion should we just mount a TP engine and call it a day or should we use one of our existing studied designs? PD-170 performs better than TAI expected but those two still come short of the requirement of operating at 40 to 45k feet for the high-altitude intelligence drone. It really forces engines and PD-170 can't carry enough payload to that altitude range.
The weight of PD-170 is similar to a 750hp PT-6 turboprop.
