Istanbul famously straddles two continents and lies in a risk zone of extreme tectonic tensions. Geologists fear the city will be hit by a particularly severe earthquake in the next few years - with devastating consequences.

Marco Bohnhoff is a seismologist with the German Research Center for Geosciences in Potsdam. He and his team are on their way to the Princes Islands in the Sea of Marmara near Istanbul, a city of 15 million inhabitants. With the help of several measuring stations, the scientist wants to develop a new type of early warning system for earthquakes in the region. In a best case scenario, it would send warning signals hours or even days in advance. The Anatolian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet directly below the Sea of Marmara, making the risk of earthquakes particularly high. In the case of a big tremor, Turkish disaster management authorities forecast at least 80,000 deaths. In the last few years, the city has been trying to become more earthquake-resistant, for example by tightening building regulations. However, the Chamber of Civil Engineers is skeptical, with chairman Cemal Gökce stressing: Not everything that is new is earthquake-proof. Seismologists such as Marco Bohnhoff, as well as disaster prevention experts and engineers, are working flat out to prepare Istanbul for future natural disasters by constructing special buildings and improving forecasting. Because it seems to be only a matter of time before the big quake comes.

It is a miracle no building is collapsed...
It is God's grace that no one was harmed, but we must put aside political fights and renovate the old buildings in the city immediately. The victims of political fights have always been the people, the politicians look after their own interests...

It was very short and relatively mild. The looming Istanbul earthquake won't be anything like this

Has there been concrete policy action on this (the big inevitable one on Istanbul at some point)... especially since the Hatay earthquake?

There is in theory, not in pratice.

All the signs show that the people in charge are waiting for the earthquake to level the city so they can rebuild whats left of it afterward, sadly.

There doesn't even seem to be a proper effort to move the industry out of Istanbul(or Marmara region) as well.

Can you elaborate a bit? Like what did they do besides fixing public buildings like schools or hospitals? There are over 600k high-risk buildings in Istanbul. What have they done about it exactly?
Build up buildings without permissions and building regulations, is forbidden and will be paid with high prison sentence. All new buildings have to meet the requirements (earthquake save).

Get rid of apartments and skyscrapers.

Stop the mass migration into Istanbul.

Invest in the entire country.

The way I look at its already too late. Decades of Turkiye has been built like this. I dont want to talk about corruption as all of us know how bad it is.

It's the opposite. It was illegal to build a building without permits but thanks to your beloved AKP they all gained legal status. Now you can't even sue them because these rotten buildings are completely legal. AKP has fucked up big time. Watch below public service ad. It's a fucking disgrace.
