MKE's Fırtına Blows Silently

Mechanical and Chemical Industry Incorporated Company (MKE A.Ş.) presented its Hybrid engine Fırtına (Storm) howitzer at IDEF 21.

In 2017 MKE was experimenting with hybrid solution of Firtina engine. But now this latest engine they have displayed in IDEF seems to be very promising.
1300HP power with 10000NM torque is enough to power most MBTs comfortably.
Again they have used an electro-diesel engine whereby they have done away with transmission and the need to have a second motor.
This new engine’s power, torque, maintenance intervals, full loaded range, weight and fuel consumption are much better than the all Diesel engine version. On paper this new engined Firtina is a no brainer.
This will also mean we can sell it whoever we want!
Come on MKE bring on the hybrid engine for Altay!

The Germans are at it again.

If the production unit is not in Germany, German government does not have much to say.
Just like MTU tank motor factory is owned by RR but the factory is in Germany and RR can not make MTU to sell the motor to Turkey.

I guess Utku will take a long time to become fully operational. Also the hybrid engine solution is in the same boat.
So the interim solution is the current one with L3-Harris and Allison power pack.
Apparently The AVDS of L3-Harris has 80% common parts with the engine that Catterpillar Defence UK has. Allison transmission is from UK as well.

It may be ready next year. But it will have to go through Turkish Army’s rigorous tests before accepted. Same goes for the Utku engine. First the factory will complete it’s tests. Then the Army. They can start the test on the L3 Harris power pack straight away. (Provided it will fit in the current engine housing without problems)

Dont forget that mkek is a gov company ..so the army definitely involved in the development phase and know about how it goes ..so i dont expect it will talk a long time

Turkish industry is in twilight zone. It can either take a step back and use conventional technologies very fast or it can take step forwards and have innovative new designs that will take a bit longer to make...

Yeah, we all know MTU is way better. But the competitor gave lots of guarantees regarding the export to third countries. Maybe Azerbaijan can get Fırtına-II now.

Considering the Guarantees, why not integrate those on ALTAY which should be easy because ASFAT Kayseri knows the Engine well.
Challenger 2 with its 1200 HP Engine and 65 Tons weight proves that it could work.

Is it realistic to build a new from ground up or will they cannibalize existing Altay for testing purpose ?
