Libyan appeals court rejects petition to cancel Dbeibah's candidacy​

ALibyan appeals court rejected a petition against interim Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah’s candidacy to run for Libya’s presidential elections, reports said Wednesday.

Former Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha was among several presidential hopefuls who filed an appeal against Dbeibah’s candidacy.

Opponents of Dbeibah argue that the prime minister did not resign his post three months before submitting his candidacy as per the election law.

But the Fawasil news platform reported that the Tripoli court rejected Bashagha’s appeal.

According to the same source, Dbeibah will remain on the list of candidates for the Dec. 24 elections.

Previous reports claimed that the the court accepted the petition signed by several people, including former interior minister Fathi Bashagha against Dbeibah’s candidacy.

Libya’s presidential and parliamentary elections are set to take place on Dec. 24 under an United Nations-sponsored agreement reached by Libyan political rivals during meetings in Tunisia on Nov. 15, 2020.

The application deadline for those wishing to run for the presidency was Nov. 22. Nomination for parliamentary polls is still open till Dec. 7.

Libyans hope that the upcoming elections will contribute to ending an armed conflict that has plagued the oil-rich country for years.

A total of 98 candidates, including two women, had registered for the December polls, according to the country's High National Election Commission (HNEC).

Among the most notable hopefuls is putschist Gen. Khalifa Haftar, leader of forces controlling the country's east and parts of the south. He is accused of committing war crimes against civilians. His campaign was supported by Egypt, France the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Russia, but collapsed when militias backing the Tripoli government, with support from Turkey, gained the upper hand.

Interior Minister: Security situation no longer acceptable for holding elections​

Minister of Interior Khaled Mazen has warned that the situation is no longer acceptable for the electoral process to proceed, as he referred to the failure of the Sabha Court to consider the appeals brought to it due to security threats, which puts the elections security plan at risk.

Minister Mazen's remarks came in a statement issued jointly with Minister of Justice Halima Abdul Rahman.

The statement confirmed that the Presidential Council assigned the ministries of Interior and Justice to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack against Sabha court.

"The attacks that occurred in the electoral processes are one of the long standings. Our cadres and institutions have long faced pressure and challenges."

The ministers said that they preferred to restrain and not take the matter to the media to avoid escalation in compliance with the government's speech, which is working relentlessly to lower tension for the success of the electoral process, as they put it.

Mazen referred to several breaches, including the seizure of electoral equipment in the city of Ajdabiya and the direct threats to several security officials who had attended a training course in Tripoli concerning the elections.

"We declare today that the continued obstruction of the security agenda and the expansion of violations and attacks will harm all efforts put into the electoral security plan, which will directly affect the progress of the electoral process and our commitment to hold it on time," minister Mazen said.

He stressed that such a path would lead to more insecurity and threaten the nation.

The statement of the ministries of Interior and Justice came against the background of the inability of the First Instance Appeals Committee in Sabha, since last Thursday, to consider the challenge submitted by Saif Gaddafi after an armed force affiliated with Khalifa Haftar stormed the court premises to halt the case.

Pro-Haftar parliament forms committee to observe Libya elections​

Libya’s eastern-based House of Representatives has established a five-member committee to communicate with the elections commission and observe upcoming elections, a report said Tuesday.

The spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Abdullah Bulaihaq, said that the committee will seek to determine problems facing the elections process in the country, Anadolu Agency (AA) reported. He noted that the committee is supposed to present its report, prepared by the five-member committee, before the parliament session on Dec. 14.

Some 70 pro-putschist Gen. Khalifa Haftar lawmakers had requested to interrogate elections officials over suspected fraud and concerns.

As the clock is ticking, the House of Representatives and the High Council of State officials have yet to come to an agreement to determine the legal framework of the presidential and parliamentary elections in the country.

On Sept. 8 Aguila Saleh, speaker of the House of Representatives based in Tobruk, who is also a political ally of warlord Haftar, announced unilaterally that he had enacted a law on presidential elections on Sept. 8.

High Council of State rejected the law, which had paved the way for Haftar to run in the polls. Haftar's dual citizenship and military role stood as obstacles against the criteria for the candidacy.

The House of Representatives announced with another unilaterally enacted law on Oct. 4 that parliamentary elections would be held one month after presidential elections.

The application process for candidates in Libya’s presidential polls ended on Dec. 7, the elections commission announced Tuesday.

While the number of final applications has not yet been determined, an official told AA that they do not expect it to be above 5,000 and that it will take three days to finalize them.

France who is now faced with the same situation as Turkey against Britain has suddenly shut its mouth about the East Med as not to lose its position against Britain. You see Britain can just like you do claim that its small islet off the coast of France grants it a huge EEZ. Meaning the Channel will be completly shut off for France.

Hmm remind you off something`? Why is France suddenly fighting this policy while it was trying to support Greece in its own maximalist claim against Turkey? Shouldn't they accept Britains claim as they expect Turkey to do so? Weird.

Greece is a pawn being used by bigger states to poke others. In 5-10 years it will find itself broke, irrevelant and possible under sanctions. Possibly even out of the EU and NATO.

Turkey on the other hand will have weathered its economic hardships and will continue being a regional power, sitting at the same table as the other revelant nations. Oh I also think it is only a matter of time until the US suddenly again finds Turkey very important for the security of Europe.
