Since Monday we have seen such a huge destruction that took place in Turkey, and Syria. We have witnessed a lot of negativity by the lack of urgency from the authorities. In the meantime, we have also been flooded with a lot of different information, but I think we all know that this is a very difficult, and demanding task for the state, and the rescue teams.

I feel really sad about the event that is taking place as many others, but I want to highlight something. I feel really proud of the Turkish, and Syrian nation that is showing such huge courage, and patience. I saw a lot of different survivors that have lost their families, and wealth but still care for other people around them. May Allah bless them, and give them strength. Today we are one, united with our donations, hearts, and prayers!

Buildings can be built safely even for this magnitute, it needs special techniques such a shock absorbers but its possible and should be done so.
The problem is human life is just not worth the money for most contractors, why would they even invest in those, there will be no consequences anyways.

The magnitude is not the issue here,
If the houses made accordingly to any building codes and columns and bulkheads are preserved, they would withstand the earthquake just enough to save people living within them. Even for a 7.8 magnitude.

A house does not need to remain usable after such an earthquake, or become inrepairable and demolished in most cases. Only buildings that needs to withstand once in 1000 years eartquakes are the state buildings and major infastructure.

Or in Tokyo, the buildings shake like crazy but not a sinlge damaged building, the magnitude of tohoku erathquake on the sea was 9.1 and in Tokyo itself it was 7.4, not far from our earthquake.

Their early warning system work accurate to the second.

Meanwhile we here try to find excuses why our buildings collapse, shame on us.

On top of it, since the quake occurred closer to surface than most, the amount of energy released to the surface was more devastating than a usually deeper seismic activity.

With deep reinforced concrete walled foundations and right building methods, plus, if the builders are not allowed to scimp on materials, there is no reason the buildings are not capable of withstanding to powerful earthquakes like the one we had on Monday morning.

Also there should be certain legislations about how high buildings should be and towards where to grow the cities; like, not along the sides of rivers and soft grounds etc.

We have the Construction codes on par with US and Japan, the problem is nobody cares, neither the contractors nor the state organs who are supposed to enforce them.

Your scaling is wrong, 6-7 is a factor 10 means 7.6-7.8 would be double not quadruple, besides, my city was hit with 7.4 and almost whole city got destroyed, 1999 earthquake claimed around 20k lives despite being ''4 times less strong'' (in your words) than Tokyo earthquake while the casualties in Tokyo were marjinal compared to that.

It wasn't an aftershock. It was a separate earthquake from a different fault line.

An earthquake with 7.8 magnitude is 1.5 times bigger and releases 2 times more energy(stronger) than a 7.6 magnitude earthquake.

24 Vietnamese soldiers and medical workers flew to Turkey on Thursday to help search for victims of devastating earthquakes that killed more than 17,000 in Turkey-Syria.
The 24 soldiers and medical workers were dispatched from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and all were veteran rescuers with over 10 years of experience.
To An Xo, spokesman for the Ministry of Public Security, said it was the first time that the ministry sent rescuers to do international missions in an area so far away from Vietnam.
Nguyen Chi Thanh, 42, from the HCMC firefighting police division, said rescue operations would be difficult, but he would try his best. In 2020, Thanh had entered caves that were 220-280 m deep in the northern provinces of Ha Giang and Cao Bang to retrieve dead bodies.
