Breaking: The 14-story Alpargun Apartment Building in Adana was the only building to collapse in the area. 50 people died in the rubble of this building. The contractors of the apartment building (father and son) are alleged to have fled abroad.

The building has no foundation, unbelieavable.
Actually that is the common foundation they used to use in most buildings in Hatay. There are still hundreds of buildings with that type of foundation. This building must have been built with good standard materials to have stayed intact. It hasn’t collapsed.
But with proper earthquake legislation it should not have been allowed to have such a shallow foundation.
A deep reinforced concrete curtain walled basement should have been incorporated.
It is absolutely scandalous to have such a foundation.

Hence the enourmous amount of casualties.
My uneducated estimation is that at least half of the casualties would have been avoided if the buildings were according to codes.

There are hundreds of heart wrenching videos on TikTok that'd make you cry your heart out. It's so difficult to comprehend the working conditions of the rescue workers, the experiences of the survivors in the pitch black rubble stuck for days, the dialogs between the rescuers and survivors, moments of earthquake from inside the buildings, outside the buildings, the aftermath.. These videos are not circulated on the internet. They're not gore but very difficult to watch and hear. I just watched a video when the rescue worker talks to a little girl in the rubble, asking how she is and she says "I've been here with the lifeless body of my father for 30 hours."

I chocked up. 😢 There are hundreds of videos like this.

An apartment where not even the windows are broken.

I just watched a news report on haberglobal, an olive orchard in a village in Hatay. It was turned into a Canyon with a collapse of almost 10 meters, then the muhtar pointed to a place and said that it used to be a hill. We see incredible things.

We are facing a disaster that changes geographies.

The canyon formed after the earthquake. The two sides you see in the video were the same olive grove, side by side. With the earthquake, the land split in two and this canyon was formed.

Btw , I still see Syrian lovers and lickers on every platform. We don't want any Syrians in the country. We don't care which side they are from, which shitty sect they belong to or whether they are opposition or not.

This has nothing to do with racism. We did not find this country on the road, we made it our homeland. It was watered with the blood of our grandfathers, martyrs and veterans. They cannot come as guests from another country and claim this place as their own, cause trouble, engage in voyeurism, gangsterism and theft.

They should take their lovers in Turkiye with them when they leave. We will get rid of this mentality that was brought in the time of Yavuz Sultan Selim.

Let them take refuge in Iraq, Arabia, Jordan, UAE, Egypt, Qatar, Palestine, etc. They love each other too much anyway.

Yup, there is going to be lot of trauma effects that will persist by this alone in many people (even those far from the region). Life is very cruel thing sometimes.

It is why I cannot bear to go watch those videos past a point....this day and age gives much resolution on it compared to before (and many of us are not really used to this in the end for such tragedy scale).

I hope for the best for all those affected to heal as best as they can. It is very sad....theres lot of people I see I wish I could be there to give some support as they are extremely distraught.

My neighbor lost a three-story-building in this earthquake. He is over 60 years old and a very good friend of our family. You know this type of friend well. The guy who is almost as close to you as your next of kin? That's him. We call him makarnacı because he used to sell packaged pasta in his youth to provide for his family. At least, that's what our elders told us.

This building was his home and his old age money in one. This was his retirement account that went down the drain. He lost his life savings in mere seconds. All the years of hard work and counting every penny spent just perished in oblivion. Can you imagine the pain?

I saw him, he looks so broken and so small.

It's not just the money lost that is upsetting him. In the end of his short while on this earth, all of his life-long efforts, the time and energy are amounting to a worthless pile of rubble that has even suffocated innocent loved ones. In his case, his only grandchild. He died in that building in Malatya.

I saw a video of him trying to help the rescuers save the little boy from certain death, carrying tiny rocks, bits and pieces of metal to the side of the collapsed building. He looked so fragile to me as if the next aftershock could collapse him, too. Not one person dared to stop him, everyone knew he just wouldn't go away.

He was definitely of no help, in fact, his energy was barely enough to sustain him, yet, he didn't stop.

Tears were rolling down his cheeks. When you see an old man cry, it does something to you.

Criticism is sometimes overdone. Now, first of all, let's accept this: Earthquakes in our country are deadly earthquakes because they occur close to the surface and there are crowded settlements around the fault lines. Likewise, the accelerations measured in the last earthquakes were at values far exceeding the specifications such as 1.3 G - 2 G. Moreover, there was a 7.5 magnitude earthquake in the same place one after the other. These were the misfortunes that happened, that's part of the Divine Decision. Let's focus on the things we can fix. Let me take a broader view.

When I look at the big picture, I see a huge inefficiency for the construction industry. We say control, it's good, but the number of people to be controled in the current system is more than it should be. The man was uneducated, "I become a construction master instead of being unemployed." He said, and we gave this unqualified person a vital responsibility, such as pouring concrete or connecting columns. What happens if you supervise such people, what happens if you do not! We shouldn't have to control this type of unskilled workforce. Therefore, we need to change our construction technology very urgently. We have to switch to an automation-based system, which is based on assembling ready-made parts like Lego and does not require unskilled people much.

I will give an example from our defense industry. I will talk about pistols, there is no need to go from complex weapons. Do we have guns produced by every workshop owner? No! Because it's a weapon after all, and it's no joke. The number of manufacturers from the private sector producing pistols in the country is only 4 that I know of. Moreover, those manufacturers use the highest quality raw materials with state-of-the-art CNC devices. So they invested in automation. Well, why very big is the number of people who produce our houses where we spend our whole lives and to which we entrust not only ourselves, but also our entire family's lives? Their production is not carried out with such automation at all. Are earthquakes a joke!?

The contractors were especially cherished by the populist right-wing governments (AKP, DYP, ANAP etc.) Even politics was financed through them. When the construction industry goes through a transformation as I said, we will see big changes in 3 main issues. a) Construction costs will decrease over time. b) The number of contractors will decrease rapidly. Except for the big companies, they will be excluded from the sector. c) Since it will no longer provide employment for the unskilled labor force, the financing of politics will not go through the contractors. Reforms on the horizon regarding the financing of politics will also be facilitated in this way.

Politics, meaning this case, the state cannot properly control the one who finances it! We must first liberate politics. The way to do this is to make the construction industry more efficient. The construction sector will no longer be employment-oriented and will be based on automation. If only 4 pistol manufacturers are sufficient for the country, then 5-10 big construction companies will meet our needs.

What is the practice of insuring properties in Turkey like?

It’s quite common and often mandatory insuring properties in the US be it commercial, residential or rental and is becoming a mainstream practice in India’s Tier-I & II cities as well
